Showered With Love

Lifestyle, Wedding March 13, 2016

Weddings are NUTS!!!!!!  They are the most stressful, frustrating, fulfilling, and beautiful thing you will ever do. You shell out more money then you ever thought you would but you also get to bask in the love of your friends and family. Or you don’t and it’s a total drama fest…luckily that not my story.  My bridesmaids have been absolutely phenomenal and my family has been on board from day one. Well, they all put their cute little heads together for my garden themed bridal shower. Let’s also take time to thank my photographer Arayna Eison

Before everything kicked off I took some time to meditate on the porch.   I also spent time talking to some guests and putting on this silly face. I don’t know what I was thinking.

I walked into absolute perfection. Tents, pianos, flowers, food, loved ones…what more could I ask for?

They know how to make me happy…confections.

Yummm red velvet.

My mother made an amazing speech.

My future hubbs made an appearance.

If you can’t tell this is my mom, aunt, grandma and little sister.

My cousin Trisha.

And he any, my little princess, Kaylynn-flower girl.

My other cousin Swaren.

My girls Kim (Matron of Honor, Fevi, and Ashley). They made this whole event happen.

Sasha my bridesmaid. She played a central role in the planning, her little artsy fingerprints were all over everything.

Then there’s Stevie. He graciously overestimate us his yard and sang us a few songs. He’ll be the music director for the wedding. If you tune into our wedding on Pericope you’ll probably hear him.

All in all it was another successful, touching, and beautiful day!

Bachelorette Weekend

Lifestyle, Photography, travel, Wedding December 29, 2015

Shout out to my phenomenal bridesmaids!   Your crazy bride here, wanted a weekend in the snow rather than a night of debauchery.  And you know they wanted some debauchery.  But these lovely ladies took me on a little mountain adventure anyway!  Even though they all couldn’t make it. They all went out of their way to plan or send goodies.

I mean look at this cute little condo complex.  The snow was just perfect.  We arrived on a Friday with snow already on the ground stayed on Saturday while it snowed, then left on Sunday after the snow melted.

Look at this living room!!! Ugh just perfection.

These white walls, adorable little stools, and old school Mammoth map…perfecto!

Everything was just clean and trendy.

I bought a special Mammoth jacket and I’m obsessed!  There’s my glitter mug. That tutorial will come soon.

We had logs.

And we had fire.

So of course we made s’more.

My cute contemplative LaKeisha.

We drank hot wine. Yup, hot wine!  Red wine, burbon, and cinnamon, I think. Delish!

I played in the snow!

And I used the Fujitilm instant camera they so graciously bought me.

Then I flexed my night photo muscles and took some real pictures. We were literally frozen after this. It took almost an hour.

We had to say good bye but we promised to return and bring more of our girls next time.

Beach Girl

Art, Lifestyle September 7, 2015

As a born and bred Orange County girl the Pacific Ocean flows through my veins.  Water has always brought me peace and been a centering force. So, moving into the heart of LA hasn’t been a completely natural shift.  I mean it’s wonderful and everything but it’s just NOT THE BEACH!!!

I spent a little quality time in Santa Monica fighting the crazy tide…thanx El Niño. But surfers were out and the sun was high.

Stunning!!

Just look at my little big man! It may be time to leave the city.

The Day Of

DIY, Lifestyle, Wedding September 2, 2015

Weddings are always a mixed bag; filled with happiness, joy, and even some tears. Well, at my bestie, Keisha’s, wedding we laughed, cried, meditated, and celebrated one another while watching her transcendental travel down the aisle.  I mean look at how gorgeous she is…stunning!

The weekend started in the truly fab town of Laguna.  Where the views are breathtaking, the neighborhoods are comfy, and the beaches are clean.  You can’t beat this view…I was uber excited because I got to meditate from this balcony every morning.  A dream!

What do you get for the spiritual and perpetually busy bride?  We got her some travel bags in her favorite color, blush, and some colorful panties tastefully hidden in little boxes.  We even threw in a hat for hubby.

Our bride loves letters and notes so I used some of my best crafting skills to make a box and water color a quote on the lid.

With a little love, we drafted touching personal letters and I watercolored and mounted them.

It all went in a Harvard colored L. L. Bean bag.  Did I mention the couple met at Harvard’s Business school.  Let’s talk about geniuses.  I can’t wait for some smart little babies!!!
Then the bride gave us some amazing gifts.

The robes and earrings were just perfect.

I made the bride a groom a ceremonial broom to jump.   What’s the point of a crafty friend if you can’t use her skills?  A lot of people don’t understand what jumping the broom is all about.  Well, back during slavery, African Americans were not allowed to get married.  So, they created their own marriage ceremonies which involved jumping over a broom to signify their bond.  Talk about creative.  Many African American couples still jump the broom at the end of their ceremonies to symbolize this same union as well as remember the sacrifices of our ancestors.  This history moment brought to you by Cupcakes.

Then it was time to get our bride ready.

Perfection!!!

We traveled from around the globe, with girls coming from as far as Dubai.

They were married on the lawn of the Montage Hotel in Laguna overlooking the ocean.

The children were absolutely adorable!

My hubby to be was divine so I had to steal a smooch.

Then we cut a rug.

Love my ladies, Susy, Ruta, and Rachel!

Then this happened. Yay weddings!!!

Party All The Time!

Advice, DIY, Wedding June 22, 2015

IMG_7728

Throwing parties are one of the funniest/most stressful part of being a future bride.  It takes equal parts intense planning and a total “go with the flow” mindset. So needless to say, I had to do a lot of meditating last week.  Here’s a quick walk through engagement party #2 Orange County.

Fresh flowers were a must.   My favorite DIY floral arrangements include Peonies, lisianthus, hydrangea, hanging amaranthus, and tons of greenery.  Oh and I also spray painted some Starbucks bottles for vases.

I like to add a little quote to remind everyone why they came.

Then there was our LOVE table.

I simply love brunch, so our engagement party was filled with eggs, pancakes, fruit, veggie meat, and all types of confections.  I made some cookies that I will feature in a future post.

No brunch is complete without mini pancakes and fresh berries.

Selfie cookies were a must.  Such a great company!

Just me and my Mommy!  Also, note the floral wall.  This was my favorite project of the event.

Two of my 7 bridesmaids were able to make it out.  In these days and times we live all across the globe and it’s good to see each other when we can.

See what they gave me?  Oh it’s nothing, just a basket FULL of cuteness!!!

There were selfies galore, this was one of my favorites!

Stevie did some singing, there’s no way he can be within 20 feet of a piano and not take full advantage.

The party was a day before my Grandma turned 89.  Yup, this lady is 89, Black don’t crack.  I believe that’s what they say.

Even Erin and Kevin were surprised.

These women have all known me since before I was even myself.  They have been spectacular guides and wonderful examples.

We welcome the new additions to our family with open arms.  We were so glad Pastor White, my soon to be Father-in-law made it out.  There’s my flower wall again…it made another appearance.  Embrace it!!!

Overall, the day was a success.  Aaron and I thank all of you that made it out and those of you who were there in spirit.  XOXOXO

Make it Your Own!

DIY, Wedding June 9, 2015

I’m all about the details and in preparing for this engagement party pink water color is a standout theme. This was a pretty easy craft with a super adorable outcome.

First I headed out to Michael’s and grabbed some $1 wooden sporks.  Easy!

Then I just grabbed my handy flat brush and some pink winter color and went to work. I started at the tip of the handle and painted a tough stroke toward the prongs of the fork. I made sure the paint didn’t end in a perfectly square line. The jagged edges add some character.

Let them dry and it’s time to party!

Calling all my Bridesmaids

DIY, Lifestyle, Wedding January 16, 2015

2015/01/img_3940.jpg

It’s go time…wedding planning has commenced and bridesmaids have been chosen.  Why ask like a normal person, when you can mail them a balloon filled with glitter and a note?  I never would, and that’s why I thank Pinterest for it’s many wonders.

2015/01/img_3939.jpg

To get started you’ll need: a box, string, balloons, glitter (duh), Safety pins (not pictured), a funnel (I clearly made mine from paper and tape), and your message.  I got my supplies from Moskatels but if you don’t live in SoCal you can go to Michaels, also known as, the best place on earth.

2015/01/img_3936.jpg

Here’s my message.  I took it all the way back to junior high for this one.

2015/01/img_3933.jpg

Roll up the message and slide into the deflated balloon.  Pretty simple.

2015/01/img_3932.jpg

Then use your funnel to add the glitter.  I used large and small glitter.  You can NEVER have too much glitter, don’t let anyone tell you anything different.

2015/01/img_3931.jpg

Then blow up the balloon, make sure it still fits the box (releasing air from a glitter filled balloon is NO fun).  Tie the string and add the “pop me” note and safety pin.

2015/01/img_3927.jpg

Now your done and you can make all the ladies, or gents, in your life feel super special.  I love all of my ladies!!!  More arts and crafts to come.  We have another art day scheduled for this Sunday!!!

Morning in Downtown!

Fashion, travel July 27, 2012

Waking up in Kalmar, Sash and I had too many things to do.  After all, every good jet setter worth her weight in Louis Vuitton has every moment of her day filled with foreign fun.  So, we quickly got ready, found some bikes, had some much needed coffee from a local shop, and headed to the mall.  We didn’t buy too much but had the funnest/most stressful time finding a converter so we could finish our hair…ugh make sure you have the right converter readers.  It is a huge hassle.

In honor of the Swedish flag I wore some yellow shorts.  Well, I just wore them because they are adorable, but let’s pretend I put more intention into my ensembles.

Showered with Love!

Lifestyle May 22, 2012

This weekend I went to my first bestie’s bridal shower.  This is a most momentous event in a world were people just don’t tie the knot anymore.  We all arrived at the shower location, a home with a protected courtyard filled with pink and delectable things.  My favorite type of pink things.  Of course we played shower games separated by dancing, hula hooping, and water balloons.  Yes, a room full of Black women and water balloons and nobody complained. Amazing!!!

Of course there was cake and cupcakes.  They were amazingly simple and sweet, we had our chocolate and vanilla base, with sweet butter cream  and a berry frosting.  I didn’t have any because I still need to fit into that wedding dress, but I only heard amazing things about the sugary treats.

Then when it was finally time to go, we were able to fill bags at the candy station.  The hit of the day was the bride’s mother’s home made mints.  You haven’t tasted mints until you’ve tasted Aunt Linda’s mints.

Alright C&C readers I hope you experienced the awesomeness of this shower.   All I have to say is I can’t wait for the amazing day where my Kimmy Kakes will become Mrs. Kimmy Kakes-Gentry!
