Mala, Meditate, Mindful

Advice, DIY, Lifestyle, Mental Health January 10, 2017

IMG_0630.JPG

With the world becoming seemingly more and more chaotic, I needed something to slow me down.  As many of you know, I practice mindfulness and meditation regularly and wanted my DIY this week to reflect something that will help my mindfulness journey, a Mala.  A Mala is a necklace of beads that you can use to count mantras or breaths during meditation.  They come in four different lengths 18, 27, 54, or 108.  I figure I need all the mantras possible so I went with a 108 bead Mala.

So, I headed down to The Bead Shop in Laguna to find the perfect beads for my meditation needs.  Ha that rhymed!  Also, I totally recommend that you go to an actual bead shop, don’t just order online.  There’s something so mindful about touching everything and getting a feel for what you’re buying. Anyway, I bought 108 counting beads made of Earth Jasper also known as the “Supreme Nurturer” it reminds us to help one another and brings tranquility into our lives.  Then I grabbed 3 marker beads made from Agate which is a protective stone.  Your marker beads should be a different size so you will know when you’ve passed a particular number of beads.  Then I bought one large Agate guru bead.  The guru bead is the large bead at the apex of the Mala where the tassel hangs.   I also added a pretty little tassel and Ohm symbol.

The spacing can get a little confusing, to keep everything simple I placed a large marker bead every 27 counting beads and the guru at the bottom.  It all came together to form 4 sections of 27 beads.

Happy meditating my friends!

The Best Meal of the Day

Lifestyle August 22, 2016

IMG_6562.JPG
Brunch is the fanciest of all meals.  It’s for those of us too busy for breakfast but too hungry to wait for lunch.  The staff of the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla California set up such an amazing spread for my friends and I, just 15 amazing blogger and influencers enjoying a fabulous weekend on the beach.

IMG_6540.JPG

I worked against my own best interests by noshing on chocolate, bread, and assorted libations, but what’s brunch without a few bad decisions.

IMG_6491.JPG

The beach has always been a place of balance and reflection in my life, a place where I could focus on getting back to basics.  There is something about being in the presences of all four elements at one time that really serves to ground me.  I could barely even focus on eating while taking in the view.  Ok, seriousness over…

IMG_6489.JPG

I even made a little beetle friend.  Hey, antenna off my pitaya, my new favorite fruit.  Don’t get me started on my favorite pitaya bowl at Leno Juice Bar, but that’s a convo for another post.

I realized that I like Eggs Benedict.  Look at this little nugget of amazingness.

We even had a private presentation of a La Jolla fashion line Timmithea.  That cute little lady in pink is the fabulous Timmithea Leeds.

So cute!!!

I obsessed over that maxi skirt.  So Audrey! Well C&C readers look forward to more posts of my transcendental weekend at the La Valencia Hotel.  xoxoxo

Hello Cafe

Food, Lifestyle July 25, 2016

FullSizeRender 2.jpg

Without being even a little bit dramatic, I think I’ve been to the cutest place on the planet.  We call it the Hello Kitty Cafe.  Things don’t get more adorable than bow cut out guard rails, adorable employees all in pink with little bows, sprinkle decor, and pink everything.  My hour long wait in the 100 degree weather was worth it, worth it, worth it.  What’s a little sweat and some ruined edges between friends?

So, if you want to go out to the Cafe you first have to head to the Irvine Spectrum.  Not a bad place to end up.  You also get to wait in line in the shadow of this nostalgic ferris wheel.  This is the first Hello Kitty Cafe in the US and it will only be here for a year, so don’t wait too long.  I’ve heard rumors that it may stick around but let’s wait and see before we engage in too much wishful thinking.

The line is fabulously long, but I guess that means that you get to make new friends and get a tan.  My wait gave me some time to get interviewed by the Japanese media.  No idea what channel but I guess I’ll be on on the news somewhere talking about my obsession with pink and Hello Kitty’s positive outlook on life.  As an aside, I also caught a Pikachu, the Spectrum is lousy with them.  Go team Mystic!

I was half exhausted half trying to give FACE. You can see the desire to sit down in my eyes.  Necessity truly is the mother of invention and this hair style was an impromptu, in line, necessity.  I pulled it back, rolled it upward, and tucked into my headband.  This may happen again.

Finally, I made it to the front of the line.  YAY!!!!!!

Here’s where they keep all the goodies.  There are pocket pies both berry and Nutella, birthday cake, puff pastries, and strawberry cake.  There are bow shaped water bottles and an assortment of lemonades.  I got strawberry mint.  I heard rumors that there were donuts but I didn’t see any.

Here is the cashier taking the order for the very cute family behind me.  I think they had the happiest baby in the world.

Here’s the Japanese news reporter eating in the shade.

My bag of swag, two bottles of water, a pocket pie, and a mug.  I love the gentle pink light that was cast one me from the pink and white striped awning.

This was probably the best strawberry, mint lemonade ever.  After standing in 100 degree weather for over an hour, it was everything!

One for me, one for my bestie!  She’s the real Hello Kitty aficionado.

This pocket pie may look unassuming but it may ave been the most tasty thing I’ve ever eaten.  It may be due to my fast from sugar and meat but it was absolutely transcendental.

And finally we have my mug.  My coffee has never been cuter.

Bachelorette Weekend

Lifestyle, Photography, travel, Wedding December 29, 2015

Shout out to my phenomenal bridesmaids!   Your crazy bride here, wanted a weekend in the snow rather than a night of debauchery.  And you know they wanted some debauchery.  But these lovely ladies took me on a little mountain adventure anyway!  Even though they all couldn’t make it. They all went out of their way to plan or send goodies.

I mean look at this cute little condo complex.  The snow was just perfect.  We arrived on a Friday with snow already on the ground stayed on Saturday while it snowed, then left on Sunday after the snow melted.

Look at this living room!!! Ugh just perfection.

These white walls, adorable little stools, and old school Mammoth map…perfecto!

Everything was just clean and trendy.

I bought a special Mammoth jacket and I’m obsessed!  There’s my glitter mug. That tutorial will come soon.

We had logs.

And we had fire.

So of course we made s’more.

My cute contemplative LaKeisha.

We drank hot wine. Yup, hot wine!  Red wine, burbon, and cinnamon, I think. Delish!

I played in the snow!

And I used the Fujitilm instant camera they so graciously bought me.

Then I flexed my night photo muscles and took some real pictures. We were literally frozen after this. It took almost an hour.

We had to say good bye but we promised to return and bring more of our girls next time.

Yummm

The little tiny hungry girl inside of me couldn’t let this moment pass quietly into the night. I LOOOVE macaroons!  They are just so simple a chic. Truly the perfect snack.

And if you like macaroons then you have to get them from Bottega Louie. It is downtown LA’s little window into delicious French snackerie…yup snackerie, I made that up.

I mean look at this absolute perfection.  Packaging isn’t just about putting a great product in a box. It’s about creating and tapping into the emotions of consumers. A lot of thought and research goes into creating these iconic designs. Different colors evoke different feelings, some may even make you want to purchase more goodies.  I think that’s the goal.

Pink is the color of gentleness and love and evokes feelings of calm. It doesn’t make me hungry but since it’s my favorite color it encourages me to buy, buy, buy. Some of the effects of color are due to personal factors and preferences but there are definitely effects that impact all of us. It’s just evolution baby! For example, colors like red and orange get our attention because they have historically signaled danger. Thus, stop lights and road cones.

I’m so sure you didn’t sign up for this little lesson in color theory, you just wanted to look at pictures of macaroons. But now that I’m done forcing you to learn some random information, go and see how colors make you feel today.  Ciao!

Wedding Season

Wedding October 6, 2014

IMG_2093.JPG

This was what our caravan saw as we ended our 5 hour drive to a beautiful, secret, location in California. My first thought, “gorgeous!”

IMG_2090.JPG

IMG_2099.JPG

The barn was spacious with actual hay on the ground. There was a game of horse shoes, a full sized carriage, and, my fav, a wall of antlers. The tables were set toward the back of the barn and they were simple, clean, and utterly flawless. The bride and groom sat at their special table with lavender garland and beautiful tableware.

Then the big moment!

IMG_2091.JPG

They were married in Italy and partied with us in Cali. Mazel tov Mr and Mrs Dizak!!!!!

I was definitely the girl with about 5 wedding invitations on my fridge this past season so expect more posts!

Meet and Eat

The best part of having a business meeting isn’t the actual business. Don’t let anyone lie to you. It’s all about the great restaurants. Today I met at R10 Social House in Redondo Beach, CA. This place has only been open 6 months but has built up a consistent clientele and has an amazing aesthetic. They also buy only locally grown produce and make everything from scratch.

Loot at these adorbs teal chairs around the downstairs bar. Yup there is a downstairs and upstairs bar. Everyone likes some spirit diversity.

20140731-231840-83920663.jpg

The upstairs bar is surrounded by comfy couches, an outdoor patio and overlooks an adorable ballad singer siting on a stool with a guitar. Music while you drink…perfection.

Here is the view from my booth. Yes paddle boarders.

20140731-232232-84152142.jpg

I had some heaven hill whiskey bread. I mean who wouldn’t like that.

20140731-232448-84288212.jpg

Then came this delish modified caprese salad. All in all an amazing meeting.

Zen Reminder

Advice, Art June 30, 2013

20130630-210906.jpg

As my significant and I walked among towering statues from India, Indonesia, and the Middle East, I was taken back by this standing Buddha. He was created in 200 BC in Pakistan. His face was so serene, his worn gesture of peace so purposeful. He reminded me to be at peace no matter what and as he stood there I was reminded to stand tall.
