My Little Birthday Boy!

Food, Lifestyle September 20, 2017

Yesterday was my beloved, Aaron’s birthday.  I always greet this day with equal parts excitement and trepidation.  Because what do you do or get for a person that has such specific interests.  I mean literally, this guy would want like a $10K camera built in 1893 currently residing in a small town in the French countryside.  Like how do I get him that?  So, when you find yourself in a similar situation go sentimental and focus on experiences rather than things.

IMG_8046Since he turned 33 I wrote down the 33 reasons why I loved him so much and hung them from balloons in our bedroom.  All the inside jokes, all the moments, all the touching expressions.

FullSizeRender-6Then I just love the cute balloons.  Thanx Target!

gracias-madre.jpgThen we scheduled an intimate dinner with 10 of his closest friends at Gracias Madre in West Hollywood.

Pink Ombre Cake Time!

DIY, Food, Lifestyle June 2, 2017

I love cake.  Well, I guess there aren’t many people that hate cake…but I really really love it.  My mother was a big baker and we baked a cake every Friday.  It was our Sabbath tradition.  So, I want to integrate it into my new life with my hubby.

File_002 (13).jpeg

Today isn’t a baking lesson, just a little cuteness for your day.  But this is the very helpful baking pan set I used from Target.   I bought a simple white boxed cake and used some of the massive amounts of pink food coloring I have lying around the house…yes I have so so much pink food coloring.  I gathered 5 bowls and added 1 cup of batter to each bowl.  Then I added no food coloring to the first bowl, .5 drops to the second, 1 drop to the third, 2 drops to the fourth bowl, and 3 drops of food coloring to the fifth bowl.  I mixed them well and added them to the pan and baked them as directed.  They baked very fast.  Keep an eye on them.

Make a Healthy Watermelon Cake

DIY, Family, Food, Lifestyle September 7, 2016

File_000 (1).jpeg

I love a good blogger collab.  So, Blue Lilly Pad and Me (Cupcakes) teamed up to make a delish and healthy cake made from…drum roll please…watermelon!
File_003.jpeg

We started off with a real life watermelon. OOOHHH AHHHH!

File_006.jpeg

Washed some berries.

We cut the top and bottom of the watermelon then cut the rind away.  Blue Lilly Pad was a master fruit maven.  Try to get the watermelon as “cake shaped” as you can.

File_002.jpeg

Next, we made the whipped cream.

2 cups heavy cream

2/3 cup powdered sugar

1Tbs vanilla extract

lime zest

File_004.jpeg

Add the ingredients into your mixer and whip for 6 minutes at a speed of 4.  Toward the end, we sped it up to 8 for a few seconds.  Mind you, we ruined our first batch by mixing it too long.  It literally looked like congealed milk.  Ewwww!

File_001.jpeg

Dry the watermelon with a paper towel and spread your fresh whipped cream just like frosting.  Blue Lilly Pad’s little, Chef Zam, helped with this stage.

We added some blueberries around the base, clearly, they were drowned in whipped cream, covered the walls of the cake with fresh coconut, added our berries to the top and of course chocolate chips.  Yay, we’re done!

Blue Lilly Pad and I then had a little photo shoot.  Look forward to that soon.

Stickhouse Gelatos

Food, Lifestyle August 30, 2016

Yesterday I went to the yummiest place on earth, Stickhouse in Santa Monica. I walked past it twice and could no longer abide their sweet confections not in my belly. So I went for a fine “sticked” Italian gelato.

You walk in to the bright and trendy shop to a fine array of gelato on a stick. The almond cherry was by far the prettiest, but of course I went with chocolate.

Next, the gelato maven behind the counter dips your pop in one of three different chocolates (quite masterfully) and then your choice of hazelnut, coconut, or pistachio.

Then you get this delicious treat!!!

Success!

Hello Cafe

Without being even a little bit dramatic, I think I’ve been to the cutest place on the planet.  We call it the Hello Kitty Cafe.  Things don’t get more adorable than bow cut out guard rails, adorable employees all in pink with little bows, sprinkle decor, and pink everything.  My hour long wait in the 100 degree weather was worth it, worth it, worth it.  What’s a little sweat and some ruined edges between friends?

So, if you want to go out to the Cafe you first have to head to the Irvine Spectrum.  Not a bad place to end up.  You also get to wait in line in the shadow of this nostalgic ferris wheel.  This is the first Hello Kitty Cafe in the US and it will only be here for a year, so don’t wait too long.  I’ve heard rumors that it may stick around but let’s wait and see before we engage in too much wishful thinking.

The line is fabulously long, but I guess that means that you get to make new friends and get a tan.  My wait gave me some time to get interviewed by the Japanese media.  No idea what channel but I guess I’ll be on on the news somewhere talking about my obsession with pink and Hello Kitty’s positive outlook on life.  As an aside, I also caught a Pikachu, the Spectrum is lousy with them.  Go team Mystic!

I was half exhausted half trying to give FACE. You can see the desire to sit down in my eyes.  Necessity truly is the mother of invention and this hair style was an impromptu, in line, necessity.  I pulled it back, rolled it upward, and tucked into my headband.  This may happen again.

Finally, I made it to the front of the line.  YAY!!!!!!

Here’s where they keep all the goodies.  There are pocket pies both berry and Nutella, birthday cake, puff pastries, and strawberry cake.  There are bow shaped water bottles and an assortment of lemonades.  I got strawberry mint.  I heard rumors that there were donuts but I didn’t see any.

Here is the cashier taking the order for the very cute family behind me.  I think they had the happiest baby in the world.

Here’s the Japanese news reporter eating in the shade.

My bag of swag, two bottles of water, a pocket pie, and a mug.  I love the gentle pink light that was cast one me from the pink and white striped awning.

This was probably the best strawberry, mint lemonade ever.  After standing in 100 degree weather for over an hour, it was everything!

One for me, one for my bestie!  She’s the real Hello Kitty aficionado.

This pocket pie may look unassuming but it may ave been the most tasty thing I’ve ever eaten.  It may be due to my fast from sugar and meat but it was absolutely transcendental.

And finally we have my mug.  My coffee has never been cuter.

Raspberry Love

Food February 22, 2016

I wanted to make my sweetie a little something sweet for Vday. But I didn’t have a ton of time and my oven was really not my biggest fan so two tries later we had something to be proud of. Here’s how I made a delish raspberry reduction for a French vanilla cake.

What you’ll need:

1 1/2 cup frozen raspberries

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

1/4 cup sugar

Prep:

It’s really simple. Put all of this is a medium sauce pan, heat it up, and stir. When it starts to look a little like jelly you’ll know you’re done.

I honestly didn’t make this cake from scratch. I bought a French Vanilla box cake and called it a day. But it was delish.

I finished it off with a raspberry reduction heart. It was pretty easy I just put a cookie cutter on top and used it as a stencil. Happy baking!!!

Overnight Oatmeal

Family, Food, Health, Photography, Uncategorized January 19, 2016

New Years resolutions are in full swing and let’s be real, we ALL want to tone up a little. We’ve been moving our beautiful bods and making healthier food choices.  This is yet another healthy little addition to your morning routine.

It may look like typical oatmeal but there’s a twist. To start, take a half cup oats, 3/4 cup almond milk, dash of brown sugar, and some fruit. Put it all in a fancy bowl and throw it in the fridge. Let it sit overnight and you’ll have a healthier version of instant oatmeal in the morning. Just one minute in the microwave. Simple!  It’s great if you’re busy early in the morning and don’t have time to boil water and wait.

As a Wholefoods warrior I love little random decadent delights. This yummy, caned, wine piqued my interest. We mostly turn our first world noses up at boxed and caned wines but when something is this adorable how can you. Look at her just so cute!

I mean look at this cute little pink and green can. Skeee Weee to all my Sorors out there!  But of course I poured it into a copper stemless wine glass. I simply do my solo morning wine tasting right.

And yup delish. Light, fizzy, a little sweet, but mainly I tasted lime. Reminds me of summer at the beach. If you want something fun and refreshing for a girls night or brunch try Pampelonne found at Wholefoods.

Yummm

The little tiny hungry girl inside of me couldn’t let this moment pass quietly into the night. I LOOOVE macaroons!  They are just so simple a chic. Truly the perfect snack.

And if you like macaroons then you have to get them from Bottega Louie. It is downtown LA’s little window into delicious French snackerie…yup snackerie, I made that up.

I mean look at this absolute perfection.  Packaging isn’t just about putting a great product in a box. It’s about creating and tapping into the emotions of consumers. A lot of thought and research goes into creating these iconic designs. Different colors evoke different feelings, some may even make you want to purchase more goodies.  I think that’s the goal.

Pink is the color of gentleness and love and evokes feelings of calm. It doesn’t make me hungry but since it’s my favorite color it encourages me to buy, buy, buy. Some of the effects of color are due to personal factors and preferences but there are definitely effects that impact all of us. It’s just evolution baby! For example, colors like red and orange get our attention because they have historically signaled danger. Thus, stop lights and road cones.

I’m so sure you didn’t sign up for this little lesson in color theory, you just wanted to look at pictures of macaroons. But now that I’m done forcing you to learn some random information, go and see how colors make you feel today.  Ciao!
