Sensory Bday

DIY, Lifestyle September 21, 2015

If you’re anything like me you approach birthdays with equal parts excitement and gift induced terror. How do you go about giving something meaningful while protecting your bank account and maintaining your sanity? Go with something right in front of your face. We use our senses every day to experience our world so why not make that the focus of your gift.

For taste I made my beloved some Oreo chocolate chip cookies. I mean, who doesn’t love two cookies in one?
Next a smell that reminded us of a trip we took to the beach. I added a little disk inside the candle reminding him of how much he means to me.

Tapping into my hubby’s love of information and looking at things I got him a book by one of his favorite authors.
Then I took it back to junior high school and made him a playlist on Spotify.

Obviously touch is a fun one.  I’ll just keep that to myself.

Tie it all with a pretty bow and you’re done, done, done!

Gilded Love

Lifestyle September 10, 2015

We all have that super old something or other that we just can’t let go of.  This is mine! Just a mug.  Instead of staring at this blank slate day after day I wanted to amp it up a bit. Let me walk you through this super simple little update that brought some shine to my morning coffee.

Her’s my original beloved, Target “A” mug. Oh how I love Target.

A quick trip to Michael’s yielded this awesome paint pen, oil based and metallic. I only colored in the “A” but obviously some of you true artists can make your own designs.   Mine dried overnight but that’s purely because of laziness. I’m sure it was dry within an hour.

Then pop your newly fabulous mug on an oven safe tray and inside a cold oven, < this is key (keeps the mug from cracking). Then heat to 350 degrees and keep it in for 30 minutes. You can do this twice if you want-overachievers!

Now you have a gilded and shiny hand painted mug. How easy was that?!?  Think about it, affordable, personal Christmas gifts. A dream!

And here it is on the gilded pillow I made earlier this year.

Beach Girl

Art, Lifestyle September 7, 2015

As a born and bred Orange County girl the Pacific Ocean flows through my veins.  Water has always brought me peace and been a centering force. So, moving into the heart of LA hasn’t been a completely natural shift.  I mean it’s wonderful and everything but it’s just NOT THE BEACH!!!

I spent a little quality time in Santa Monica fighting the crazy tide…thanx El Niño. But surfers were out and the sun was high.

Stunning!!

Just look at my little big man! It may be time to leave the city.

The Day Of

DIY, Lifestyle, Wedding September 2, 2015

Weddings are always a mixed bag; filled with happiness, joy, and even some tears. Well, at my bestie, Keisha’s, wedding we laughed, cried, meditated, and celebrated one another while watching her transcendental travel down the aisle.  I mean look at how gorgeous she is…stunning!

The weekend started in the truly fab town of Laguna.  Where the views are breathtaking, the neighborhoods are comfy, and the beaches are clean.  You can’t beat this view…I was uber excited because I got to meditate from this balcony every morning.  A dream!

What do you get for the spiritual and perpetually busy bride?  We got her some travel bags in her favorite color, blush, and some colorful panties tastefully hidden in little boxes.  We even threw in a hat for hubby.

Our bride loves letters and notes so I used some of my best crafting skills to make a box and water color a quote on the lid.

With a little love, we drafted touching personal letters and I watercolored and mounted them.

It all went in a Harvard colored L. L. Bean bag.  Did I mention the couple met at Harvard’s Business school.  Let’s talk about geniuses.  I can’t wait for some smart little babies!!!
Then the bride gave us some amazing gifts.

The robes and earrings were just perfect.

I made the bride a groom a ceremonial broom to jump.   What’s the point of a crafty friend if you can’t use her skills?  A lot of people don’t understand what jumping the broom is all about.  Well, back during slavery, African Americans were not allowed to get married.  So, they created their own marriage ceremonies which involved jumping over a broom to signify their bond.  Talk about creative.  Many African American couples still jump the broom at the end of their ceremonies to symbolize this same union as well as remember the sacrifices of our ancestors.  This history moment brought to you by Cupcakes.

Then it was time to get our bride ready.

Perfection!!!

We traveled from around the globe, with girls coming from as far as Dubai.

They were married on the lawn of the Montage Hotel in Laguna overlooking the ocean.

The children were absolutely adorable!

My hubby to be was divine so I had to steal a smooch.

Then we cut a rug.

Love my ladies, Susy, Ruta, and Rachel!

Then this happened. Yay weddings!!!
