Alright people.  Friendsgiving was so exciting and my life so exhausting that it took me almost a week to post this.  But I made it and just in time to show you some table ideas for the real deal, THANKSGIVING!!!  I love Friendsgiving and for multiple reasons of course friends and food are among them but it also serves as a dry run for fun decorative ideas. I mean I NEVER get to design my mom’s tables like this.

Ok first things first.  Setting up the folding tables was all about understanding the space and the needs of our guests.  The space was my cousin’s gorgeous home with wood floors and glass walled, colored lit recording studio.  The guests were 50 super smart super chatty people that wanted to talk and eat.  So, rather than arranging out 4 folding tables in a long banquet style I made two square tables.  This was accomplished by aligning the tables side by side.  Everything was covered with white linen table clothes and a black and white printed runner (in other words old washed curtains).  Renew, reuse, recycle!

Then I started layering my table.  First the gold chargers, napkin, gold paper plate, and silver disposable flatware.  Let’s be honest for a moment.  If you invited 10 people then you use real dished but if you are expecting 50, disposable is the only option.  Then I wanted to add some height with large glass vases, mason jar, wine bottle with candle, and mercury votive.  After that I started layering flowers.  First the hanging amaranthus, then a whole array of chrysanthemums in purple, dark purple, and white.  Finally, I placed candles and my little spiky balls from my last post.

Here is a close up of the hanging amaranthus.

And here is more I placed above the mantle.  Finding balance around the room is very important.  You don’t want uber cute tables and a drab space.

Then we ate and were merry.

The spinach balls were inspired.

And look at how cute this little patio is…ummm adorbs.

This Friendsgiving, the Thanksgiving dinner my friends and I have the week before the real deal, I have been asked to decorate. So, my table scape has to be fabulous which means putting in some preplanning.  My first subproject is all about small styrofoam (Michael’s) balls and toothpicks (Ralphs).

Here is a set up step by step.  The general structure isn’t difficult but it will require you to tap into your inner physicist, but we’ll keep it simple X, Y, and Z axis stuff.  Basically make sure each toothpick has a buddy on the exact opposed side of the styrofoam ball. If they don’t, no worry it may look a little goofy but we love all of our children.  Then snip the ends so they are not the most dangerous things ever. I’m just saying.

Make as many as you want, I made about a dozen.

Then spray (Home Depot) away. I spray everything in a old suitcase on my patio. Oh apartment living!

IMG_2739.JPG

Quick tip. Make sure you don’t get too close to the styrofoam. Most spray paint will eat it alive. But you better believe I’m still using this one.

Now you’re done. Some people add glitter but I’m keeping it simple. I can’t wait to show you all the full table scape.

This Sunday I did one of the most exciting things in maker/craft world, went to the Rose Bowl Flea Market!

IMG_2638.JPG

I meet a delicious little retro pink poodle.

I fell in love with all the jadeite dish wear. But I was also intrigued by the bowl that looked like a sea creature.

There was every kind of knob…

And beads that made me feel like I was lost at sea.

Then I ate garlic fries with LOTS of love. Vampires stayed far away for the rest of the evening.

I also bought this little guy and gave him to a dear friend as a housewarming gift.
