When I first stumbled upon this picture I was drawn to the bold colors and stark difference between this Mwila woman and her baby daughter. I was inspired and wanted to know more about the culture, specifically their fashion. Every aspect of her dress means something about her position in society. Her hair is heavily ornamented with red earth, called oncula, couri shells, and braided in 4 and 6 braids, called nontombi. Her stunning layered beaded necklace, a Vilanda, indicates that she is a married woman. She will never take it off, not even to sleep. Take some time to embrace another culture today!
